At 50,000 miles , and earlier, the engine warning light came on, the truck lost all power, and the power steering failed. Upon taking the truck to the dealer, it was determined that the throttle body was defective, and needed replacing. Needless to say, I think that this should not have happened at such a low mileage and should be covered under a recall. Thanks for allowing me to vent. I purchased my 2004 f150 used from a local dealer, I had a 30 day 3000 mile warreanty. I purchased it with 72,000 miles for $15,899. 00. Within 3 days it started a shaking, vibration going up inclines around 45 mph. I contacted dealer and they told me it was the catalytic converters, a day later it was doing it again, I called dealer and they said I was out of my 30 days. Obviously it wasnt the cats. I read all the complaints online about this problem and it sounds like Ford knows there is a problem, then they should be responsible to recall it. This is my work truck and my only transportation.

Overdrive on my 2004 Ford f150 bit the dust after only 55000 miles. Mechanic could not rebuild the transmission had to be replaced. Cost $2356. 78 to repair! of course truck was out of warranty! bob boyd Ford dealership in lancaster, ohio was less than helpful. Mechanic discovered that the case had large grooves in it where the sealing rings on the output shaft ride.

Own a 2004 Ford F-150 4 door. I have had to replace three of the fourpower window regulators. All three were still under warranty also, the transmission hesitation/loss of rpm/ while driving more so on the freeway when the rpm's reach about 1200/1500 or loss of rpm on deceleration. The dealer would not look at my tranny. Truck was still under warranty. Now 1 year later my tranny has gone out. I have no warranty and not sure how much it is going to cost to get replaced. I believe this all could have been avoided if the dealer would have just looked at my tranny when I asked while my vehicle was still under warranty. Mileage is approx. 98,684. Less than 99,000.

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

My overdrive gear got wiped out. While driving the truck I got up to 30 mph and the engine started to rev up real bad and would not move. The truck has 65,000 miles on it and was not beaten on at all. Just one month past the extended warranty and Ford won't honor the warranty or extend it. From what I am reading this happens a lot to the 2004s. The next vehicle won't be a Ford. . I suggest that no one buys a Ford truck as they will have the same problem. My fathers 2006 had the transmission go out at 55000 miles. This is obviously a problem that Ford needs to own up to.

2004 F150 Transmission Problems

I own a 2004 Ford F-150 four door extended cab pick up. I have used it as a recreational vehicle and it only has 58,914 miles and the transmission has broken. I took the truck to the shop and the mechanic stated that there was no reason the trucks transmission should have this issue. He stated that unfortunately it has been his experience that this particular year Ford f150 has a history of poor transmission performance due to its very thin transmission gears. He stated the truck was in very good condition, I had proof of my maintenance schedule.

Transmission went bad after warranty.

2004 F-150 5. 4 engine 4x4 crew cab. While driving between 15-20 mph metallic grinding is coming from under the truck. Last for about 5 second until something fall to place like gears in a transmission. It has happen two time and I have schedule the truck for maintenance at sno country Ford in monroe wa. I only have 1000 miles left on my extended service plan. I hope they fix the problem the first time before it expires.

Failure Date: 08/06/2008

The transmission went out at 35,000 miles. The truck has never been driven hard. Metal chips all over. I have to pay for a new transmission for an obviously lemon of a transmission, however I have read on message boards that alot have complained about the same thing happening. I hope that Ford recalls the transmissions for these trucks and reimburses me for the 3,800 dollars I have had to pay koons Ford to get a new one. Does not seem right.

Failure Date: 07/14/2008

This has been ongoing for about 10 months. On an infrequent basis, the transmission, when decelerating, starts to growl loudly and will not stop until I come to a complete stop. I have spoken to other F-150 owners and they have informed me of similar complaints. To date, no crashes or injuries are known by me, but I feel Ford is responsible for this obvious defect.

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

Transmissons began shifting up and down too often. . Next a hum and then jerks in between shifts. Took it to aamco and ran diagnostics. . Results were internal damage. Drove truck home and back the next day for replacement cost $2,200. 00 nomal use with occassional 4x drive. 114k miles.

Since I bought this truck it start it having transmission problems , I would get in the dashboard transmission fault and took it to the dealer (7 times for transmission) and they would said there nothing wrong . Now there is no warranty they want to charge me 3000 dollars .

I own a 2004 Ford f150 4x4. I had serious transmission problems and had to have the transmission replaced. The first time was 2/07 with 42,000 miles on the vehicle. I have never towed anything with the truck. My mile are commuting miles. The transmission was supposedly replaced. Now here I am 2 years and 60,000 miles later and I am having transmission problems again. After investigating this problem, it appears that this is an ongoing problem with Ford. Ford needs to step up and take care of their customers before someone is seriously injured or killed.

2004 F150 Transmission

Experience consistent significant jerk/clunk/slam after coasting in 3rd gear and accelerate down shifting into 2nd gear. Service bulletin says normal and to not repair, yet my issue is not intermittent and is a significantly noticeable and uncomfortable jerk in the driveline that is definitely not normal performance from any transmission aware of without a very aggressive shift kit installed and a plethora of horsepower. Took to dealer and service tech handed me service bulletins and didn't even log into computer that vehicle was taken in for the issue. Made notes and sent to shop foreman as communication of my concern about the lack of paperwork and record, and the lack of service. Technician drove truck and said this was normal. . . Would never buy a vehicle knowing that it would end up shifting like this as normal wear and tear while under warranty.

Failure Date: 08/08/2005

Vehicle will not hold on hill. Will travel back down hill as if in neutral when transmission is in drive.

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

I bought a 2004 Ford f150 in April 2004. Several times in the past 10 months, I have brought it to the dealer to have them fix two problems. The first problem is regarding my brakes. They continually squeak and sometimes feel sluggish. I had a jiffy lube representatives inspect my brakes and they said the rotors looked scarred. I brought this to the attention of the Ford dealer and they said my brakes were within Ford specifications, and they could not do anything for me. The second problem revolves around a transmission that skips in an out of gear. In several poinst, while pulling on to highways, the transmission skips and and delivers too much power to the rear wheels, causing the tires to slip on wet pavement. Luckily, neither of these incidents has caused any accidents. However, I am concerned as they happen frequently and the dealer states that the conditions are normal. I have researched these problems and found that many 2004 f150 super crew owners experience similar problems.

Failure Date: 02/17/2005

When transmission shifts it has a clunking sound and truck vibrates. I have taken it to the dealer (allan vigil) fayetteville GA. 3 times. The final outcome is that Ford engineers say this normal. I disagree. Worst truck I have ever owned. Ford needs to fix this issue.

Failure Date: 12/17/2004

The contact owns a 2004 Ford F-150. While driving at any speed, the transmission will automatically switch from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. The contact had to make 3-5 attempts before the vehicle would shift back into 2 wheel drive. Also, when the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive, the steering wheel is very difficult to turn. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 22,229 and failure mileage was 22.

Failure Date: 11/25/2004

Transmission tends to pop and switch gears on its own. Reverse occasionally serves like the neutral gear, preventing vehicle from backing up. Vehicle taken to dealer for testing , but results show that everything is normal. This tends to be a problem only when consumer is operating vehicle on own time.

Failure Date: 11/12/2004

I bought a 2004 f150 stx 4x4 in late February of 2004. The truck has a 4. 6 liter v-8, automatic transmission and a 3. 73 limited slip rearend. Since I have had the truck the rearend has developed a loud whining sound and slung the rearend lube out and under the bed. It was replaced and have had not further trouble in that area. The truck then developed a stall like it was low and gas and blew black smoke on cold starts and take-offs. That problem still hasnt been solved after 3 attempts w/ my dealership to get it fixed. The windsheild also developed a large crack in it, it was replaced. The dealership said that it was stress related. Currently the truck is at my dealership unmoveable because the transmission just recently went out. The dealership refused to fix my truck because they 'claim' it has water in it. The truck has never been exposed to water other than what rain gathered on the road. My dad went to inspect the situation and they only showed him water in a cup he didnt see and drained from the transmission.

Failure Date: 08/17/2004

While driving and coming to complete stop automatic transmission didn't shift properly from the first to the second gear, finally the stick shift didn't move from park to a drive gear. Also brakes vibrated while driving at any speed .

Failure Date: 08/09/2004

When shifting gears the automatic transmission shifts very hard I understand this is due to the overdrive not operating correctly. I have had other people tell me theirs trucks (Ford f150) do the same thing. Is their a recall on this problem?.

Failure Date: 06/02/2004

The truck has had multiple vibration at varying speeds but mostly at highway speeds since it was bought. The f150 has been in many times with many parts replaced, vibrations seem to be worse now than before. I tried factory buyback with Fords board but they seem to think it is fixed, I have ask them to drive the truck again like the dealership did to verify the vibrations. They seem uninterested in my problem and they have not fixed a damn thing since the board decision that it is fixed but it is worse and I told them it was worse personnally, the truck is a pile of poop and Ford knows it but because many of these trucks have the problems they are not willing to fix the problem.

Failure Date: 04/27/2004

I have an 2004 Ford F-150 supercab 4x4. A few days after I bought it, it developed a slipping / shuddering problem in the rear end when you started from a stop and while turning. Sunstate Ford said that the slip yoke had no lubrication. So they lubed it. Within 2 days the problem re-occurred. The shuddering happens hot or cold but becomes worse the more the truck is driven. When I brought it back to sunstate Ford to let them try to fix it again, they say the problem is normal. I owned alot of trucks in my life and not 1 of them did this. From talking to one of the service employees I learned that there have been many complaints about this problem. Additional info: truck has 4. 6l engine, automatic transmission, and a 3. 73 limited slip rear axle.

'new 2004' F-150 with 4x4 automatic transmission. Vehicle in drive position pointed uphill on grades greater than 20 degree will roll backwards ( as if in neutral) . Transmission will not hold vehicle in place! same results in d2,d1, and reverse. Seen by dealer and confirmed to be 'normal' condition. But no where in the owners manual is this condition stated. Tested 4 other vehicles, same condition resulted. If this is in fact 'normal' it needs to be in the owners manual to warn consumers!.
